Worked example
The New York clock jumps forward during this UTC interval. Two elapsed hours appear as 01:30 to 04:30 locally, with different endpoint offsets.
Begin with an unambiguous instant
Enter a UTC date and time ending in Z. For example, 2026-03-08T06:30:00Z denotes one instant worldwide. A local time without an offset can be ambiguous during a daylight-saving transition.
This tool deliberately does not convert an unspecified local clock reading into UTC. Establish the source timestamp first, then use the converter to display that instant elsewhere.
Elapsed time differs from wall-clock difference
Duration is added to the UTC instant in elapsed hours. A two-hour interval always spans two elapsed hours, even if the displayed local clock advances by three hours when daylight saving begins.
When daylight saving ends, the same local hour can occur twice. The offset shown at each endpoint helps distinguish those otherwise similar-looking clock readings.
Use named time zones rather than fixed offsets
A zone such as America/New_York contains rules that can change by date. A fixed UTC−05:00 offset does not capture its summer offset. The converter uses the browser runtime’s Intl time-zone data.
The start and end are formatted independently so that an offset change inside the interval is visible. A selected zone is a display choice, not evidence of the instrument’s exchange session.
Do not infer exchange hours from the result
An interval named a session here is your own observation window. The page does not know holidays, maintenance breaks, early closes or venue-specific trading hours.
For an exchange schedule, obtain the official venue time and calendar first. Convert that confirmed interval without substituting a familiar city’s office hours.
Keep timestamps with exported notes
Store the original UTC start, elapsed duration and chosen IANA zone with any meeting or review notes. Local dates can differ from UTC dates, particularly near midnight.
Time-zone rules depend on runtime updates. For future events, verify the official schedule again near the date; the tool does not promise that a government will retain current clock rules.
What this tool does not calculate
- No exchange calendar or live session data.
- UTC years 2000–2100; elapsed duration 0–168 hours. Time-zone rules depend on the runtime database.
Common questions
Why must the timestamp end in Z?
It makes the input explicitly UTC and avoids dependence on the computer’s default timezone.
Are market opening times included?
No. The interval is supplied by you. Check official schedules, holidays and maintenance separately.
Can the local clock go backward?
Yes, during a fall-back transition. Both UTC endpoints remain ordered, and the displayed offsets distinguish repeated hours.
